Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality Takes Over the Presidency of the TRNC Cittaslow Network.
In accordance with a joint agreement signed between the five municipalities that are members of the Cittaslow TRNC Network in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the roles of network president and technical coordinator are assumed by a different municipality each year on a rotating basis.
Within this framework, the Geçitkale-Serdarlı Municipality, which successfully held the network presidency last year, will take over the role, and as of 2026, the Cittaslow TRNC Network Presidency will be held by the Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality. Under the same agreement, the role of Technical Coordinator for this year will be undertaken by Şenay Tekiner Sunal.
The Cittaslow philosophy aims to strengthen inter-municipal cooperation in line with the goals of protecting local values, environmental sustainability, supporting producers, preserving cultural heritage, and improving quality of life. Cittaslow-themed activities, joint projects, and awareness campaigns carried out throughout the TRNC demonstrate that local governments have embraced this concept not merely as a title, but as a form of governance.
The Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality, having assumed the chairmanship, aims to strengthen the coordination of projects carried out in line with Cittaslow principles in the coming period, increase information sharing between municipalities, and implement new initiatives supporting local development. Our Mayor, Dr. Fatma Çimen Tuğlu, made the following statement regarding the matter:
“Cittaslow represents a conscious commitment to our city and its values; a way of life that centers production, nature, and people. As the Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality, we are undertaking this responsibility with great awareness.”
During its chairmanship of the Cittaslow TRNC Network, the Mehmetçik Büyükkonuk Municipality will resolutely continue its work with a spirit of shared understanding and solidarity, aiming for a sustainable and high-quality life for our people.
We are working for our people, for our future.
